Real NAV erosion only shows up when a fund's price falls behind its own underlying. Checked three CC ETFs, core positions in my PFs, against the closest comparison available, full common-inception window: Step 1 โ CC ETF vs. its own unlevered underlying (full common-inception window, total return): $QQCL +93.62% vs $QQCC +74.25% - beat by 19.4 points $USCL +71.39% vs $USCC +58.81% - beat by 12.6 points $HDIV +125.67% vs $XEQT +79.40% - beat by 46.3 points (XEQT isn't a true underlying , HDIV is Canadian-sector-concentrated but a useful sanity check) All three cleared their comparison, consistently across both shorter and full-history windows. No erosion here. Step 2 โ how much of that gap is leverage vs. the CC itself? $QQQL (leverage only) +69.6% vs $QQCL +58.2% vs $QQCC (unlevered) +47.2% $USSL (leverage only) +51.6% vs $USCL +43.2% vs $USCC (unlevered) +36.1% Leverage adds the most return. The CC overlay gives back roughly 40-50% of that leverage gain in exchange for monthly income but leverage+CC still clears the plain unlevered fund either way. The CC premium isn't free money, it's real upside traded for cash flow. Not erosion, just a trade-off. Step 3 โ so why are HHIS and BIGY actually down? Checked the holdings. $HHIS holds $MSTR (Strategy/MicroStrategy, ~6.4%) and CNYE, its Coinbase covered call sub-fund (~7.2%) both effectively bitcoin proxies. $BIGY holds MSTR even heavier at ~10.2%, alongside Broadcom, Alphabet, Amazon, NVIDIA, Microsoft, Apple, Eli Lilly, and Meta. With bitcoin down, that's a direct drag on both baskets. Takeaway: covered calls aren't secretly eroding capital. When a CC ETF underperforms, check what it's actually holding before blaming the structure concentrated single-name exposure inside the fund is usually the real story, not fees or CC mechanics. This is my own analysis and process, not investment advice. Do your own research before making any decisions.
