🥵 My Hot Take on Side Hustles to Invest More
Most, nearly all, side hustles are a WASTE of time and effort.
Yeah, I know I'll get a lot of push back on this. Read until the end before you jump to conclusions, pretty please 😆Â
This is my opinion... If your side hustle isn't ... Something you genuinely LOVE doing or isnt making you MORE per hour than your day job... You're just cosplaying as a very productive investor who will have more money to dump into the market, when likely it will be less.
The line between hobby and side hustle needs to be clear. It's easy to blur the two and give ourselves false reasoning. I know I've done it in the past.. more than once.
I was talking to my wife the other day, and she asked me about this topic, "Why are you still making so much content for YouTube and Blossom when you have other hobbies that you enjoy much more?"
Fair question. And I didn't have the best of reasons. I stopped making videos since world cup has been on to enjoy being in a host city for likely the only time in my life.Â
Here's a funny part about this... Most hobbies cost something... But YouTube can also earn you some... Making it kind of free... Or even a living wage for about 0.1% of channels.Â
Just as an example, my MOST viewed YouTube video ever has made me $71.55 in gross revenue. It costs me about $50 a month in software to run the channel 🤣 I could have bought a WC ticket for the cost of running the channel in 2026 🤔
When I factor in the hours I spent researching, filming, editing, thumbnails, and replying to comments, I could have earned WELL over $1,000 working my main hustle instead.
Financially? ... It's an idiotic trade of my time and energy.
And I know that. Even if I made $1000 a video, financially it would make more sense to work OT at my main hustle.
The difference is...I enjoy making content A LOT. Explaining financial principles, challenging common financial advice that ignores the nuances, and hearing from people who tell me a video or a post changed how they think about money and investing is really rewarding for me. The one thing I don't like is feeling pressured to make content for the sake of making content or being on a timeline.
So it's not a side hustle, nor is it a hobby that occasionally pays me something to offset the cost.Â
What would you call this?
Let me know and then I can continue the convo with the wifey because I really don't know 😂Â
As for side hustles in general, too many people start a side hustle because socials told them everyone needs as many income streams as possible. Or they hear of others making "tons" of money to invest.Â
They spend nights and weekends making $30 hour while burning themselves out. Does that make sense to you?
I believe, the majority of the time, the highest ROI move isn't starting another hustle or any side hustle at all. No hustle is the best hustle.Â
Instead, get better at the career you already have. Your MAIN hustle.Â
By focusing all your time and energy on what you are best at and have the most potential for earnings, will pay you so much more in the long run. Â
So what's your take... Is every side hustle worth it? What criteria makes for a valid side hustle?Â
