This past weekend I picked up an overtime shift back at my old post which was 4.5hrs away. Honestly, the money wasn't the main reason I went. They were hosting a fireworks competition, my main job was security at the beach, I got to catch up with old friends, and my wife and kids came along too. The kids loved swimming in the hotel pool, and with the hotel and meals covered, it turned into a fun family weekend. The work looked like this: - 17 hours worked. (1.5 shift) - 9 hours of driving (there and back) - Acting Sgt pay at $64/hour - Double-time pay = $128/hour Years ago, I would've picked up every overtime shift I could. More importantly, I invested those overtime cheques instead of increasing my spending. Looking back, those extra shifts played a huge role in building my investment portfolio. Now the comparison is interesting. Overtime pay requires me to trade my time for money. Once the shift is over, I have to work another one to earn more. Investment growth just does its thing by itself.... My portfolio can grow while I'm at home with my family, sleeping, on vacation, or even watching fireworks. That's why I believe investing is so powerful. Use active income to buy assets, and eventually those assets start producing more wealth than your labour alone. For the Overtime shifts I made around $3800 which pales in comparison to the 30k gains from yestersday from the markets hitting all time highs lol. However I'm thankful for the opportunity and the money earned will go straight into my fund for the 2027 TFSA. π

A quick reminder for the kids out thereβ¦ You need to put in the overtime first. The returns come later. Many jobs offer more than one way to earn. Finding a job with overtime, bonuses, benefits, etc is one of the surest ways to accelerate your wealth! ππ

Thatβs a fantastic WIN-WIN You got to provide a paid vacation to your family at the same time as earning income plus overtime pay all at the same time! Congrats! And yes, yesterday was a great one day return β¦ those days are encouraging for sure!

Great perspective. Of course not everyone has the option to do this type Of OT but the underlying principal is key. The more you can invest the more growth you achieve. And by the looks of things you got some family time as well so you not giving anything up.
