Since Feb. 28, my TFSA portfolio has gone from $304,000 to $323,000... A really poor return compared to the broad market and my benchmark, the MSCI ACWI imi index. Every time I post my portfolio update, someone asks me... "So... should I just copy it?" No. Please don't. This isn't high school... and how do you know you're coping the smartest kid in class? It could be the .... 😂 What if I tell you I'm sitting on 20% cash in my TFSA, which has been about as helpful to my returns as walking on a treadmill to get to the corner store. But why hold so much cash Mr. financial?!?! Thank you for asking 😁 Because my portfolio is built for MY situation.... not YOUR situation. Maybe I'm comfortable with more cash. Maybe I want flexibility. Maybe I have plans for that money. Maybe I'm moving continents 😉 The point is, you don't know everything about anyone's situation but yours. A portfolio isn't just a list of stocks and ETFs either. It's built around YOUR... • Risk tolerance • Risk capacity • Financial goals • Time horizon For example, someone saving for retirement in 30 years shouldn't necessarily invest like someone planning to buy a house next year or someone who is retired or someone with a high paying job. So, by all means, borrow general ideas. Learn from other investors mistakes. Ask questions about why someone built their portfolio the way they did. But above all, learning investing principles that can be applied to any situation, including yours. Learn tax treatment. Learn fundamental financial truths. And just don't treat someone else's portfolio like it's a Costco sample for you to try... Our portfolio isn't a taste it to see if you like it kind of situation, with a little of everything on your plate. And even if you like the taste of it, that doesn't mean it's healthy for you.
