I guess you could say I had a bit of an unorthodox journey? I dropped out of college at 18 and attended trade school instead. I was working real world adult jobs since I was 20 and have had exposure to people from all walks of life along the way. People and human behaviour are very predictable and when you’ve worked along side other humans over enough time, you notice trends. 20-30: Let me climb the corporate ladder as high as possible and obtain all the material symbols of success. 30-40: I had my first kid and took mat/pat leave which felt like early retirement and outright ownership of my time. The corporate hierarchy or how I come off to others in terms of financial status doesn’t matter to me anymore. I just want control over my time and the ability to dictate who I spend my time with. Like any other person, I too was once super motivated by material possessions. I used to salivate at the thought of buying a Porsche 911. I had the money to do so after I paid my mortgage off, but I guess my survival instincts took over and made me buy $XEQT and $VFV instead. Great decision because I want to live off those shares later on in my 30s to take extended pat leave whenever I decide to have my first child. Super important to me to be there in the early years of their lives. I’d rather own my time than own a Porsche. I’ve organized an in person personal finance meetup where we meet in person once a month to discuss personal finance in a casual social environment. Join the group through the link in my bio! 😃

If you have the money to take the extended leave then do so. If you and your wife want to split then you'll have 69 weeks between the 2 of you to do so. Take as much time as you possibly can and don't even think twice about your job

To each their own, but a lot of people who waited to get their finances where they want it to be or overly focused on their careers before they had kids usually wished they had kids sooner rather than later. Dealing with children is a completely different experience as you age because of your energy & body being different. Any grandparent or parent who had kids later will tell you this also women opportunity to have kids is only for limited amount of time so trying to have one and giving that child a siblings is a task all within itself as you age. Anyways, great post :)

When I was much younger, I had a Camaro. Completely impractical for Canadian winters - I called it my road polisher because that's all I did all winter was polish the road to make it slippery for everybody else. I also used to play a whole lot of different sports and there was never enough space in the trunk. Now that I am older, I only want to own cars which are easy for me to get into and get out of... So that pretty much excludes sports cars and big trucks now. Even just sporty cars are out of the equation. Just small SUVs make it so I don't need to climb to get in or out. And have the trunk space and little bit of ground clearance... LOL
