Dividends don’t automatically give you a better return but they can change how you behave. Seeing cash hit your account from stocks like $SCHD, $QQQI or $SPYI can make investing feel more real and tangible. That can make it easier to keep holding, reinvest, and stay consistent when the market gets rough. For some investors, that psychological benefit matters just as much as the yield. I personally am in the middle of starting a position in dividends. Do dividends help you stay invested? Or is growth what you prioritize ?

I prioritize growth in my Traditional IRA, dividends in my Roth IRA, and a blend in my brokerage. Anything that has a distribution in the retirement accounts is DRIP’d and the brokerage dividends are used to fund my Roth contributions.

I try and stress this point to many who are beginning their investing journeys. Those dividends hitting absolutely helps create a feeling of safety and reassurance.

I made a post about my dividend investment strategy that's pinned on my profile if you want to give it a read. I personally hold all 3 and they have done well by me. I'm focused on dividends to help give me a secondary income i can depend upon, something thats very important in today's economy. My long term goal is to get my dividend income to a point where it alone can cover my monthly expenses, and have an overall decently sized portfolio that I can use as collateral for my other goal of getting into rental properties. specifically apartments as the need and demand for those is rising in my city and state (anchorage, alaska). If i can meet that goal of having my dividends cover all my personal expenses, then any money I earn from said rental properties can be reinvested and used to improve the properties or buy more of em. But that's a long term, probably 5 year or more goal, current goal is improving my income and hopefully get it high enough i can pay off my car loan early, allowing me to invest more.
