What is a market index? Think of it as a scoreboard for a group of stocks. The S&P 500 tracks 500 large US companies, the Nasdaq Composite leans toward tech names, and Canada's TSX follows the biggest stocks on the Toronto exchange. You cannot buy an index directly, but funds like $SPY and $QQQ track them so one trade can give you a slice of the whole basket. That is why headlines quote indexes: a single number tells you whether the broad market rose or fell that day. Not financial advice.
