Happy Thanksgiving. If you peeked at your account today, part of it probably looked frozen. Nothing's broken. The TSX was closed for the holiday and New York wasn't. The NYSE and Nasdaq ran a completely normal Monday. Why didn't my ETF move? 🤔 If it's listed in Toronto, it couldn't. Take $VFV. It trades on the TSX but tracks the S&P 500. Those companies traded all day. The fund that follows them had the day off. So what happens tomorrow? ⏰ The TSX reopens Tuesday at 9:30 and funds like that catch up on the session they sat out. If one opens with a jump or a drop, a lot of that is just Monday showing up late. I placed an order today. Where is it? If it was for a Canadian listing, it didn't fill. It usually just sits in line until the next open, though brokers handle the details a bit differently. Does it ever go the other way? 🔄 Yep. American Thanksgiving in November. New York closes, Toronto stays open, and VFV trades while everything it tracks is asleep. The gap between the buy price and the sell price can get wider on days like that, because the firms quoting the fund can't see live prices for what's inside it. My two biggest holdings, $NBIS and $ALAB, both trade in New York, so they got no day off. Both closed red 😅 Did you check your account today, or actually take the holiday? Educational, not financial advice. Just my read.
