$1,400 in Apple shares, bought around 2013. Worth about $32,000 today: At my cost of about $13 a share, Apple pays me close to 8%. Measured on what the position is worth now, the same dividend yields about 0.4%. Investors bring up yield on cost every time I say a 2% portfolio makes sense. Mine is high too. It tells me the purchase worked. It does not pay my bills. Retirement runs on what the account is worth today, not on what I invested more than a decade ago. Given the choice, I will take the $32,000 over the 8% "yield". Which number do you track in your own portfolio?
