Divorce doesn’t just split wealth. It can quietly destroy it. Two people who once built together…now paying professionals to fight each other. Lawyers billing by the hour. Endless back-and-forth. Decisions driven by emotion, not logic. And the most expensive part? Fighting over things that, in the end, don’t even matter. Bank accounts don’t just get divided, they get drained. Not because they have to…but because they can. What should have been a restructuring of a life turns into a slow financial bleed. I’ve seen it. I’ve lived it. And the cost goes far beyond money. If you’ve been through it, what did it really take from you? And what would you protect differently now?

The financial losses from my divorce were painful but they pale in comparison to what I gained! Divorcing my platonic roommate (wife) allowed me to deconstruct my old life so I could build the ideal life I had already “vision boarded”. I retired 9 months after the divorce, moved to a great new house/town that I love, and found an affectionate woman who is also my best friend. We’ve been living together for 10 years and it’s been great. I’m still thankful for that expensive divorce! 👍

I too have lived it and seen it and it can get nasty, I am very fortunate my ex wife never touched my work pension or went after any support, she had her own house at the time and I did as well and we just walked away with what we already had... Now my last girlfriend cost me more then my ex wife in lawyer fees and stress.. The worst part was how adamant she was to me and my friends when we met that she would never take e for anything and that she was not like that, only to turn around in the end demanding $200,000 for her to leave My house.. Just lucky and happy i had a pitbull of a lawyer, in the end I gave her a few thousand just have it all come to and end.., But like I said trusting her word and then having her do the opposite really cut like a knife and that relationship took me almost 2 years to get over.., Live and Learn as they say.... Great post Lisa,...
