My name is Davis Emele and let me start with the boring part. I started late. I had little room to maneuver when I first began my practice. I arrived in Canada with hardly any financial backing behind me. No family to support me, no head start. Not to mention that tuition really bit into my earnings. For a while, this made me believe that the time in the market theory was not suited to my personal scenario. That I had no head start before even opening a stock account. However, I soon realized that the comparison was not fruitful. Someone will always be younger and have more savings than you, therefore giving them an advantage over you. Someone will always be older and have less savings than you. Either way, it is not a fruitful exercise. The real deciding factor is having started or not. The money itself was not what surprised me. It was the psychological benefits of it all. There is something about consistently saving a little bit of money every month, while having a chunk of it taken away for tuition, having skipped some months in between, that really helps you quiet a certain type of financial anxiety that you don't really know you have. Discipline takes a backseat to the fact that you really can stick to something yourself. If you haven't started something, or you did start but gave up, or you think that you have fallen far behind and that there is no point in continuing, you are not behind. You are just not at the starting line yet. And you can't get to the end if you are just standing there, can you?
