No Pension? Your Portfolio Is Your FIRE Retirement
A lot of people envy those who started contributing to a pension early. “They’re so lucky.” “They had it figured out.” Here’s the part most people miss: 🤩 You can create the same outcome with investing. Your investment portfolio is your retirement pension, it’s just in the accumulation phase. When you think this way: • You stop chasing hot returns • You focus on income replacement • You invest more consistently • Market volatility feels temporary, not personal A pension was never about beating the market. It was about financial independence, replacing your paycheque so work becomes optional. So instead of asking: ❌ “How much can I afford to invest?” Ask: ✅ “What contribution does my FIRE retirement require?” This mindset: • Encourages automation • Builds long-term discipline • Makes compounding feel intentional • Turns investing into a system, not a gamble ⚠️ Important note: Your portfolio isn’t a guaranteed pension, it’s a self-funded retirement system you design. And that’s empowering. Because if you don’t have a pension… you’re building your own path to retirement and FIRE. Quietly. Consistently. Over time. 🚀

This resonates with me since I do not have any pension & so creating & building my portfolio wasn’t an option it was survival & I hope to grow it big enough to be able to comfortably withdraw more one day without sacrificing what I desire to leave behind for my daughter I keep learning along the way & trying to remain disciplined until I reach my goals 🙏🏻

When I left IBM in 2013,I moved the pension money out to a LIRA. Probably one of the best financial decisions in my life. I went heavy into $VTI$XQQ$XWD. 11 years later, I achieved escape velocity.

For me and my wife, we built our “Self-Annuitized Pension”. A portfolio design that reliably produces annual income the equivalent of a DB pension and grows greater than the rate of inflation, while growing the base capital. Unlike a DB pension, we will have capital we can consume, gift or even leverage off of. But it requires careful planning to achieve this.

Good point. I'm grateful to have a solid defined benefit pension thanks to my Union. But I still want to save and invest almost as if I didn't have one. This will help me be about to afford "luxuries" when I retire (travel, renos, new car, additional health expenses etc)
