Saw someone posted this and thought...this is exactly how my wife and I have lived for the past 8 or so years since we been married.. The only difference is our house was 345k and we fly to places more than we drive. Other than that it describes us to a T. We live in small town Sask, know all our neighbours, take each other's trash out, everyone puts up Christmas lights and decorations during winter, kids roam freely, zero traffic, I walk to work, summer fire in our big yard with friends, strangers wave at you when you drive by...all while stacking our investments. Living the simplier life is so good...

I wish I could say this was us. We live in BC which if you don't know stand for Bring Cash. My first Town house was 325K in 2005, I didn't travel much, drove everywhere ( 60 minutes to work, one way), we eventually moved to our first house when I met my wife. That place cost of 620K. We still drove to work and when we wanted to enjoy anything we had to drive more than an hour just to get out of the city (aka camping). We had kids and decided that it was time to make a change. Our kids were 1 and 2, we sold everything and moved to a town of 400 people. The sale of our house doubled our equity which when I look back was the start of changing our financial situation. We rented our house in this small town for $320 a month. It was 2200 feet with 1 acre. We were able to spend quality time together when the kids were young. That said we were not investing. We moved to a medium size city and had a 4000 square foot house had a 500K mortgage. We out an Air BNB suite in but still were not investing. Then my father in law passed away and things changed. Thats when I started investing and looking at our money differently. We sold that house and increased our equity again. So from that perspective we did very well. But when your net worth is tied up in your house it doesn't really help you. The real question is could we have lived in something different and still been growing our wealth. I think we all know the answer to this. But psychology plays an big part in what we do with our money. We chased nice houses because it made us feel good. But each time we added more mortgage to make that happen. Fast forward and we now have a $600K portfolio, and a house that still has a mortgage. But we do get to sit in our yard like you and enjoy where our path took us. All of this shaped how I look at money today. Great post Will

Lovely, I feel the same way, downtown Ottawa is like a small town (I wish it were a bigger city lol). My apartment and a smaller space is more manageable to me than a backyard and home maintenance. The city's public parks and amenities give me joy. Even having a calesthenic playground next to a regular playground is such a pleasant surprise,!
