Things Going South in Korea
South Korea’s stock market is having a rough session. 🇰🇷📉
The KOSPI is selling off hard, with the big semiconductor names taking much of the pressure. This doesn't bode well for the NASDAQ tomorrow.
What makes this interesting is that Korea has been one of the clearest beneficiaries of the AI and memory-chip boom. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix sit right in the middle of that trade, so when investors start questioning AI valuations, semiconductor demand, or the broader macro backdrop, Korea can get hit especially hard.
There also appears to be a broader risk-off element at work: foreign selling, geopolitical uncertainty, and pressure from higher energy prices can all matter more for an export-heavy market like South Korea.
For long-term investors, days like this are worth watching because sharp selloffs can sometimes create opportunities; but a falling price alone does not make a stock cheap.
I'll be watching:
• Whether earnings expectations are actually changing;
• Whether memory pricing and AI demand remain intact;
• Valuation versus normalized earnings;
• Whether foreign selling is temporary or signalling something more fundamental.
I’m not rushing to buy simply because prices are falling, but South Korea is definitely moving higher on my watchlist. SK Hynix was already of interest; that just intensified and I may very well take a position, although risks abound as stated above.
