Every day there's another headline about how AI is going to kill us all... with Sam Altman recently delaying the OpenAI IPO and implying that AI has a 10% chance of killing everyone by the end of the decade. Every time I see this kind of stuff I somewhat wonder how much of it is a real risk vs a marketing play to pump the stock... One Bloomberg opinion piece calls it "AI Panic Marketing": basically the message that "we're building a powerful, godlike AI that could end the world" is a form of advertising. On the other side, more than 1,000 employees across the frontier labs signed a letter this summer warning that competitive pressure was preventing anyone from slowing down, so I'm not really sure what side I'm on What do you guys think?

We are going to have to live through it if it is successful or not! π€·ββοΈ

It absolutely has the capability to take control of any system it can connect to and turn it to whatever purpose it deems necessary. All it takes is for that purpose to be self preservation and the rest of the story will write itself. So it'll take a couple hops for the systems to generate that sort of awareness, but at the rate the breakthroughs are coming. I can see it happen in my lifetime for sure.

I do not think its marketing hype. However, the timing of it definitely seems like playing to the audience as mid term elections are around the corner and many politicians on both sides of the aisle have called out the data center buildout and need for AI regulation. I am not sure of the doomsday scenario but as the hugging face incident highlighted, agents going rogue and causing havoc is a real world scenario. I relate it to bad actors having unlimited access to data and tools. Just like that could cause severe irreparable damage, if agents are supposed to replace evry job that human do, the same theory applies to agents as well.

The Wall Street Journal had the article ready before the guy even posted on X. A nothing account with no post , nearly no followers has a post for from nobody to 150 million views in a matter of days... Go ahead , create an account and talk about AI doomerism and see if you get that type of traction. You would have the same credibility as someone that work less than a year at Anthropic and claims to know enough to say it's going to kill us all. What this certainly does is harm both the companies IPO, maybe a self-deflate or attempt at regulatory capture.
