Why I Think Broadcom (AVGO) Is a Strong AI Investm
When I look at the AI infrastructure opportunity, Broadcom is becoming one of the companies I find hardest to ignore. My thesis isn’t simply that AI spending will continue. It’s that Broadcom is already showing that this spending is translating into real revenue, earnings and cash flow. In its latest quarter, Broadcom reported $29.6 billion in revenue, up 86% year over year. More importantly, AI semiconductor revenue reached $16.7 billion, growing 221% YoY, driven by custom AI accelerators and networking. Free cash flow was also an impressive $13.7 billion. (Broadcom Inc.) That matters to me because Broadcom isn’t relying on one part of the AI boom. It provides the custom accelerators and high-speed networking infrastructure required to build increasingly large AI clusters. And the opportunity appears to be expanding. Broadcom has become deeply involved with frontier AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Its relationship with Anthropic now extends beyond supplying technology: Broadcom has agreed to provide up to $42 billion of financing to support Anthropic’s infrastructure requirements. (Reuters) There are also reports that Broadcom is seeking more than $50 billion in financing related to custom AI chips being developed with OpenAI. (The Wall Street Journal) For me, these developments strengthen the long-term thesis: Broadcom isn’t simply trying to capture today’s AI spending. It is positioning its technology inside the infrastructure that some of the world’s largest AI companies could be using for years. There are risks. AI infrastructure spending is becoming extremely capital intensive, customer concentration matters, and these financing arrangements add another layer of exposure if AI companies fail to generate sufficient returns. That’s why the next few earnings reports matter. I’ll be watching whether AI revenue keeps growing, margins remain strong, free cash flow follows revenue growth, and OpenAI/Anthropic commitments turn into profitable long-term demand. If those fundamentals continue to hold, I think Broadcom deserves to be considered one of the strongest picks-and-shovels plays in the AI infrastructure buildout. Not financial advice. This is simply my investment thesis and what I’m watching as an investor.
