A budget isn't a cage. It's a map. Do you use a monthly budget ?

I try from time to time, but my income is so insanely sporadic, that it’s nearly impossible to calculate beyond monthly expenses. I end up just shovelling all my cash into a HISA, and skim various amounts off the top to invest, depending on how much of a buffer I have built up.

I split up my fixed expenses, I leave a few hundred for myself for two weeks and the rest savings. Usually around 27%

Setting a monthly budget was a game-changer. Went from “there’s no money to invest” to “how much more could I invest. At the end of each year I’ll set up a “calendar” in excel for the following year and map out every expense and all income. Covers 95% with modest adjustments (ie subscription fee goes up, income tax return adj., etc).

I can track spending but I actually am having a devil of a time creating a budget for allocating my income. It's like trying to figure out when to take profits. It should be stupid simple but I can't seem to wrap my brain around it.
