The first chart shows expectations are for higher rates over the next 2-3 years. 🇨🇦 Utilities can be ‘defensive’ but adding telcos, pipelines and leverage negates that defensiveness and adds cyclicality. Due to the more muted return path of utilities the CC overlay on Utilities also has a long history of destroying value - not adding value. Anything can happen going forward (past performance doesn’t influence future returns) but these strategies are structurally swimming against the current. It’s always best to evaluate the trade offs.
